1) How did you get involved in CrossFit? What was your first WOD/experience?
I spent a couple years at a kettlebell gym and did some half hearted running and weightlifting, but never got past mediocre shape and was looking for something new. I had some friends who were doing CrossFit and were passionate about it, so it was always in the back of my mind but I was a little scared at the same time. A new work schedule tipped the scales and I finally decided to sign up. My first WOD included box jumps and I thought I would be smart and scale it so I used the smallest red box. Charlie G. apparently found this amusing, a big oaf hopping onto this tiny box, and immediately starting goofing on it!! It was funny though and set the tone for class, everyone is here to work out but we’re gonna have some fun too!
2) When did you start coming to CrossFit Portsmouth/ how long have you been CrossFitting for?
I’ve been a member for about a year but my attendance was spotty for a while. The last 4 months I’ve been coming regularly and it’s made a huge difference.
3) When did you realize that CrossFit was right for you?
Pretty much right away. I didn’t even know exactly what I was looking for but I found it at CFP. Every day is a challenge and that alone would keep me coming back, but I’ve been totally blown away by the sense of community at CFP. I never expected to make so many friends but I always look forward to seeing people inside and outside of the gym.
4) What are you short-term and long-term CrossFit goals?
I was toying with a few ideas in my mind but finally decided to suck it up and put them on the board:
500lb deadlift
2 X’s body weight back squat
300 lb squat clean
and perhaps my biggest goal… to touch my toes.
5) What is your favorite / least favorite WOD/movement?
Overhead squats are my weakness for sure, very humbling. Burpees and thrusters have my number too.
Deadlifts, cleans, box jumps, and double unders are probably my favorites.
6) What do you do for a profession outside of CrossFit?
Technical Sales an automation company.
7) What are your hobbies outside of CrossFit?
I enjoy hiking with my pup Winston, riding my motorcycle, and checking out new places with my wife Mari.
8) What is your favorite paleo/non-paleo meal?
Grilled anything is always good. Can’t go wrong with chocolate chip cookies!
9) Fun fact?
At the end of the intro session to CFP, there was a small workout which included some pushups and pullups, and then air squats… I wanted to show off how fit I already was and pushed myself pretty hard. Afterwards I went outside to the parking lot for some “fresh air” and by fresh air I mean I threw up. I was not very fit.
