We are SO happy to kick off 2021 with our newest Member in the Spotlight, Emily Alati!
Emily has been with us at The Port for 2 and a half years, along with her daughter Sadie who joined us over the summer and her son Gus who joins us for Teens class! And we love having all of them. Emily, as you will learn below, is a working mom, pet-lover, outdoor enthusiast and just a lady on the go. She stands out to our Coaching Staff as someone who should be recognized. She’s positive, willing to try new things and push her limits (thus finding new limits she’s also ready to push!), encourages those around her, and just has this contagious energy about her. Although never showy or the loudest one in the room, Emily sticks out to us for so many other reasons. We are so glad you decided to give CrossFit a go with us here at The Port and we so look forward to seeing what other goals you continue to crush this year and beyond!
1. How did you end up becoming a member at the Port?
A friend told me the gym was “woman-owned” so I thought it would be great to support a woman-owned business. Plus I liked the thought of having a woman teach me all the CrossFit movements and I was right! My initial 1-1 classes were with Sophie, where I gained a very good understanding of each core movement and body position.
2. What has changed for you since joining? What change are you most proud of?
I’ve always enjoyed strength training and pushing myself and CrossFit has definitely delivered on both of those. I joined about 2.5 years ago and am stronger now than I’ve ever been, especially my core and upper body. Each time I learn a new movement, I’m blown away. I remember seeing someone do a kipping handstand push-up for the first time and said, “there’s no way in hell I’ll ever be able to do that”! Strict and kipping pull-ups, handstand push-ups, were never things I thought I could do. I’ve learned that everything takes time, but eventually you get there. My next goal will be one muscle-up.
In addition, my daughter Sadie is now into CrossFit and comes with me and it’s amazing! I’m so proud! The fact that she wants to do CrossFit has everything to do with The Port gym environment and Coaching Staff 🙂
3. What are a few things you love to do outside of the gym?
I’m most happy when I can be outside. I love stand-up paddleboarding, hiking, and skiing. Over the last couple of years, I’ve also really gained a love for winter hiking. This Fall I did the Presi Traverse solo (20 miles, 8 peaks) and couldn’t have done it without CrossFit. My strength and stamina made the hike much more doable and actually enjoyable! I’m ready to conquer the Pemi Loop next 🙂
4. If you were shipwrecked on a deserted island and all of your human needs were met – food and water and shelter – what are two things would you want to have with you?
Proper footwear for walking/hiking around (only because I work for a footwear company and realize how important it is) and a pet dog or cat or maybe some hot guy, LOL.
5. What is something you are looking forward to in 2021?
Health, Happiness, Love plus some “sense of normal”. Oh, and my first Muscle Up at The Port!
Thanks for all you do coaches!!! I’m truly flattered to have been chosen as the January Member of the Month 🙂
